Fishing

Fishing at Kennett river

There's no better fishing area than the Otway Coast between Lorne and Wongarra. Rocks and beach. It's wild, remote and the fishing is great!

King George whiting, salmon and snapper are common. A popular area in Wye River is 400m south of the store. Full tide is ideal for whiting and snapper. Garfish on the rising tide. Best fishing periods are evening and night (best to fish in moderate or calm seas). Popular baits: squid, blue bait and pippies.

There is mullet and bream fishing in the estuary of Wye and Kennett Rivers. An ideal bait for mullet and garfish is peeled prawns (use small portions on numbers 10 and 8 hooks). Area advice is from Stan Wright's 'Let's fish the Otways'.

Tide chart and bait are available from the general stores at Wye and Kennett.

Boat launch area is at the 163 km sign post between Wye and Kennett - 4WD vehicle essential.

A popular spot for fishermen visiting from Melbourne is also Artillery Rocks - midway between Lorne and Wye River.
